Torchy's Tacos: Mike Rypka

Mike's story begins with a challenging childhood in Northern Virginia, marked by his parents' divorce and early exposure to drugs and alcohol. After a series of struggles, including a stint in military school and rehab, he turned his life around and found solace in the culinary world. He honed his skills working in various kitchens across the U.S., eventually dreaming of starting his own brand.

In 2006, with the help of a secondhand barbecue trailer, he opened a taco truck in Austin, Texas. Initially facing significant challenges, including a lack of funds and a difficult leasing situation, Mike persevered, focusing on grassroots marketing strategies to build a customer base. His unique, inspired taco recipes quickly set Torchy's apart in a crowded market.

As the business expanded and gained popularity, Mike faced numerous struggles, including a harsh review from a prominent food critic and the challenge of competing against a copycat taco chain. Despite these difficulties, Torchy's continued to grow, leading to an investment deal in 2017 with General Atlantic, which significantly propelled the brand's expansion.

Eventually, Mike stepped down as CEO, allowing a professional leader to steer the company through a period of rapid growth, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he returned to the role in 2021, focusing on reinvigorating the brand's culture and operational excellence.
